English as a Second Language |
|

The Sarapiquí region is the fastest growing ecotourism destination in Costa Rica. Many community members recognize the need to learn English in order to take advantage of this opportunity. Community members see learning English as a means to improve job advancement opportunities, develop a small business, or facilitate international partnerships. Evening ESL classes are open to all adults and cost $10 per month (mostly to cover materials and books for the students and living expenses for the teacher) and are very popular in the local community, averaging 80 participants each semester.

In addition to the evening classes, free lessons are given to students at local elementary schools, to children attending the SCLC’s After-school Program, and to the SCLC women’s group.
