GIS (Geographical Information System) is a computer software program that allows for the creation of digital maps and the analysis of spatial data. At the SCLC, GIS is a vehicle for community planning, raising environmental awareness, increasing understanding of the local ecosystem, and teaching computer skills. The SCLC has worked to train local community members in the use of GIS for mapping related to the community census. The SCLC also is working with the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor to generate planning maps for the Chilamate section of the San Juan-La Selva biological corridor. Logistical support for the SCLC GIS program comes from GISetc, a US-based training company, and the Geography Department of the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
