Becados Update!

 By Colten Grostefon, Scholarship Coordinator

w becadosSarapiqui's local becado students seem to have a few tricks up their sleeves, as they have impressed the SCLC volunteers with their creativity, ambition and teamwork. During a recent construction activity to preserve a tomato garden at the SCLC, the students assisted volunteers by giving their own input on design and functionality of the protective structure. Not only was their input helpful, but they also took charge of constructing the overhang. The event took almost 3 hours, and at the end students were sweaty, dirty, and exhausted. However, they took charge of the project, saw their own ideas come to fruition, and were proud of their success.

w becadosStudents demonstrated their maturity again when, during the same activity, a volunteer needed help cleaning an enormous amount of trash that had spilled in front of the Chilamate Elementary School. It was a messy task, but there were absolutely no complaints heard from the students helping out. In fact, they worked so well they were even laughing and enjoying themselves during the dirty job.

During their most recent river clean-up activity, the students showed ambition by traversing through rocks and trees hanging over the water. The becados were thrilled to raft with local guides from Aventuras del Sarapiquí, and ended up collecting eight large trash bags of waste, plus a giant tire and a lawn chair. The students were actively searching for trash while also having a good time.

Needless to say, volunteers at the SCLC are thankful and fortunate to work with these gifted becados students and are excited to see what comes next.  Thank you to the  donors for all of your continued support!
