Some traditional recipes that tourists are returning home with include empanadas con frijoles, enyugados con queso, picadillo de chayote, and of course homemade tortillas!
When asked about the nature of their relationship with the SCLC and how working with the Center has affected their lives, Ticas Hilda Cota Mena and Olivia Garay Zamora responded with enthusiasm that they loved working with foreign people and learning about where they are from. Hilda explained further that she really enjoys that tourists are eager to learn about the local culture of Costa Rica. Olivia added that she likes that she gets to cook typical Tican food while sharing her culture with international tourists and finds her work very fulfilling. Both Hilda and Olivia agreed that the opportunities through teaching cooking classes at the SCLC assists the local women with an additional form of work and supplementary income. Lastly, Hilda explained she also is grateful for the SCLC and its art gallery display which enables her and other local artisans to showcase their art products as well as provides revenue from their own work while enhancing their entrepreneur skills.
