Selva Verde and students remodel greenhouse |
Selva Verde Staff and Front Range Community College student working together
Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center (SCLC) would like to thank Selva Verde Lodge and Front Range Community College for assistance in the the remodeling of the SCLC Greenhouse. Selva Verde Lodge makes yearly contributions from the income that is brought in through the Environmental Service Payments received from the government for the protection of the Selva Verde Reserve.
This contribution is earmarked for use in conservation efforts especially the SCLC Reforestation Projects. With the donation of 8 recycled plastic lumber poles and 4 plastic lumber planting beds plus a monetary donation of over $1000, the SCLC has been able to remodel the greenhouse, and ensure that it will last a long time, as well as focus on promoting reforestation amongst local school children and small farms in the neighboring communities through environmental education and ecotourism projects. In 2005 the SCLC greenhouse was built with a monetary donation made by Selva Verde Lodge using wood materials. Only a year later, the wood was already eaten away by hungry termites. At the end of 2006, negotiations were made between the manager of the lodge, Gabriel Gonzalez, and the director of the SCLC, Maren Barbee, to include within the annual contribution the recycled plastic lumber materials that Selva Verde had in their possession. In January 2007, students from Front Range Community College in Colorado, United States assisted in the reconstruction along with the direction of Walter, a local construction overseer. Once again we thank Selva Verde Lodge, Front Range Community College, and Walter for the greenhouse. We hope that their influence will spread the seed of reforestation!
