Camp Fun

Students in Costa Rica attend school between February and December so they have about 2 whole months off with very little to do. This year the center provided the students from the neighbooring communities with a two week multicultural camp where we focused on the environment, art, culture, and exercise.

The students were involved in a myriad of activities with an emphasis on environmental conservation throughout the camp. Daily itineraries ranged from creating their own passports and 'traveling' around the globe while exploring world geography and international cultures to an artisan workshop where they learned how to make their own hand-made friendship bracelets with the help of local artisans from the SCLC Women's group MORPHA. The students were able to produce colourful wrapping paper from leaf rubbings and crayons, as well as adopt pet rocks, and transform recycled plastic bottles into ant homes.  They also enjoyed playing bingo games where learning about their local environment in English was the central focus.

In addition to fun indoor activities, adventure was the theme for various excursions including a nature scavenger hunt in the rainforest at Selva Verde Lodge, planting trees in a reforestation effort to fill gaps in the Biological Corridor San Juan-La Selva, and a visit to the nearby Tirimbina Biological Reserve where they discovered about the process of making chocolate from the cacao tree. Every day the students had many opportunities to just hang out and enjoy their beautiful surroundings. When the students were asked to describe their favourite aspect of the SCLC summer camp, the unanimous response agreed by all was the Chocolate Tour and nature hikes!
